Applications of Tantalum
Tantalum is used in industrial process engineering where particularly demanding process conditions call for a carefully selected material solution. The key questions are where within a piece of equipment or plant the material is required and how it can be integrated into the design.
Pickling and Surface Treatment
Pickling and surface treatment processes place high demands on all components that come into direct contact with aggressive solutions. Tantalum is used in applications including heat exchangers, heating and cooling coils, vessel internals and piping components.
The material is particularly relevant where components made from other materials require frequent repair or replacement and a more durable and reliable solution is needed.
Chemical Industry
Tantalum is used in highly corrosive applications in the chemical industry. These include the heating and cooling of process media, evaporation and condensation, chemical reactions, as well as separation and purification processes.
Depending on the operating conditions, the material can be used extensively or selectively in areas exposed to particularly high loads. Equipment and components can therefore be tailored to the process medium, temperature, pressure and mode of operation.
Pharmaceutical Industry
The pharmaceutical industry places stringent requirements on product purity. Tantalum provides the material properties required for use in equipment designed in accordance with GMP requirements. Cleanability, drainability and maintenance requirements are taken into account from the initial design stage.
Cost-Effective Throughout the Service Life
Tantalum is a high-value material. However, its economic viability cannot be assessed solely on the basis of the initial purchase price. Long service life, low maintenance requirements and fewer production interruptions can provide significant cost advantages over the entire lifetime of a plant.
Customised design allows tantalum to be used selectively wherever it is actually required. Material usage and initial costs can therefore be optimised for the specific application.
Even after many years of operation, tantalum remains a valuable raw material. Tantec takes back end-of-life tantalum components and returns the material for recycling. Rather than being disposed of, it can be processed and reused.
Instrumentation
Measuring points are in direct contact with the process medium. Tantec therefore manufactures tantalum components, as well as components combining tantalum with other materials, for measuring temperature, pressure, flow and level.
These include electrodes, grounding rings, components for diaphragm seals, thermowells and floats. Each component is designed to suit the specific measurement task and operating conditions.
Maintenance and Plant Modernisation
Tantalum is not limited to new installations. Repair and replacement parts can be used to protect damaged areas, retrofit existing equipment or replace components exposed to particularly high loads.
Our range includes both standard repair parts and custom solutions manufactured according to drawings or measurements taken from existing equipment. This allows plants to remain in service while minimising downtime.
